Year 1 - Potter

Welcome to Potter Class

with Mrs Schiever and Ms Gamble

Exciting new adventures await us in the Spring Term!  Our learning this half term will revolve around Rudyard Kipling's 'Just So Stories', and our Talk 4 Writing Unit will use 'How Tortoise Got His Shell' as our focus text. The children will be learning more about the animals in the stories, doing some investigations into plants, and talking about how and why we look after the world in which we live.  We will be creating interactive stories using our computing skills, and learning to paint with watercolours.

Our Maths for the half term will focus on place value and number, as well as comparing and answering word problems using the skills we have learnt so far.

Children should read at home every day (so they can earn their RED awards) and we will change their reading books twice a week. We will also change our library books once a week.

PE kits need to be at school every day, as we have a variety of PE lessons, as well as extra sporting activities. Please ensure that a bag with a white t-shirt, black shorts and a pair of trainers or plimsolls is at school every day.  In the colder months, warm clothing such as a tracksuit should also be sent in.

Information for Parents: The Phonics Screening Check

The phonics screening check is a short, simple test taken by Year 1 children in England each June to assess their reading ability. Parents can watch our short video to find out what happens during the check and why it's useful.
