Year 1 - Potter

Welcome to Potter Class

with Mrs Schiever and Ms Gamble

The start of a new school year is always very exciting, and we can't wait to get to know the new members of Potter Class. We have got lots of exciting things planned!

Our story for this half term is "The Papaya that Spoke", which we read together at the end of the summer term.  We will be coming up with actions for our story, and will soon be able to tell it really well.

We will also be using the story "Handa's Surprise" to support our work in Science, History, DT and Art.

Our Maths for the half term will focus on counting forwards and backwards, more and less than, and beginning to add and subtract.

Children should read at home every day (so they can earn their RED awards) and we will change their reading books twice a week. We will also go to the library once a week.

PE kits also need to be at school every day, as we have a variety of PE lessons, as well as extra sporting activities. Please ensure that a bag with a white t-shirt, black shorts and a pair of trainers or plimsolls is at school every day.

Summer Term in Potter Class

In Potter class we are spending the final half term of the year learning about the sea...we will be retelling and then innovating the story of the Rainbow Fish in our English lesson and we will be using the Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch as the basis for all our topic work.

In our Maths learning we will be continuing to learn our number facts; developing confidence when counting in twos, fives and tens, being able to add and subtract two digit numbers and one digit numbers.

PE lessons

These will be on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

Home Learning:

Maths is sent home on Fridays.

The values homework goes home on the first Monday of each month.

Our Hundertwasser Display

Our Hundertwasser Display 1
We enjoyed learning about Hundertwasser. His paintings are brightly coloured and patterned. We tried to imitate his style when creating a picture to show the value of peace. We are very proud of our display.

Information for Parents: The Phonics Screening Check

The phonics screening check is a short, simple test taken by Year 1 children in England each June to assess their reading ability. Parents can watch our short video to find out what happens during the check and why it's useful.
