Year 1 - Potter

Welcome to Potter Class

The term started with a fantastic 'WOW' day which the children enjoyed thoroughly!!!. After reading our story 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch', the children were involved in making their favourite sandwiches. They then worked in groups to create different containers to carry their sandwiches in. There after the children tested their containers which to their amusement worked surprisingly well. They will look at the story structure to retell the story and write a similar or different ending to their story. They will also use adjectives to describe characters and places. In Science we will be learning about different materials. In Geography the children will use simple fieldwork and observational skills   to study the local environment and find human and physical features. The children will use their artistic skills to create seaside pictures.

During the Summer term Potter class will be reading books about Katie Morag. They will be introduced to the Isle of Struay where Katie lives and will be comparing the features of the island to physical and human features in Luton. They will write a letter to Katie Morag telling her about life in Luton. They will also pretend to be weather reporters to give a weather report for the Isle of Struay. Maths learning involves counting confidently to 100 and beyond and back. Counting in 2's, 5's and 10's will also be revisited this term, as will as adding and subtracting numbers. They will be discussing weather patterns for the 4 seasons and will be learning about seasonal changes. In RE the children will learn about belonging to a group.

Please remember to return all library books on a Wednesday!

This term we will be reading some funfilled stories - The Gruffalo, The Stickman and Tyrannosaurus Drip. The children have already enjoyed an interesting start to the term pretending to be as quiet as mice and going on a hunt to look for something scary!!! The children will be writing a character description of the Gruffalo as well as the Stickman. In Maths, the children will reinforce counting to 100 and back from any given number. They will build on adding and subtracting skills. They will learn about odd and even numbers and extend knowledge about fractions. We will start the term with PSHE lessons on Respect and Tolerance. In Science we will be learning about Animals, their body parts and what animals we can keep as pets. Our History topic is about 'Nelson Mandela'. In DT the children will be using their drawing skills to design and create a dinosaur linked to our story.

Please remember to read with your child on Bug Club. This counts towards the Red award. The more they read, the more prices they receive!!!

Many Thanks for your continued support.
